Garden design, hardscape and garden care in Denver.

Stonegate Gardens handles a garden from the first conversation to the weekly deadheading: design by Leslie Ebert, installation by Stonegate crews, and organic maintenance after that.

Design

A plan drawn for the way you use the yard.

Garden design is not an abstract idea at Stonegate. It comes from years of working the soil and learning that every planter, flower, tree and shrub has to fit the whole.

Leslie hand-selects every element: plant colors and textures for depth, statuary or water for richness, stepping stones, benches and pergolas that make people linger, and fire pits that stretch the season. No garden is too small. She also weighs the long-term care of every plant she chooses, so the garden looks right for years, not only in its first season.

Each project starts with a free site evaluation and a set design and installation fee. Most installations are finished within one to two weeks, depending on materials.

Patios and paths

Flagstone set in grass, dry-laid patios that ride out Colorado’s temperature swings, and paver walks that give a garden direction.

Stone in grass makes a soft patio. A dry-laid patio is a good choice for Colorado’s swings in temperature, and stone is a popular choice for resurfacing tired concrete patios, porches and walks. It stands up to hail, snow and heat. Where pets, foot traffic or poor soil defeat real grass in a small area, Stonegate installs synthetic turf with natural-looking bed lines.

Stone walls and steps

Moss rock, buff stone and veneered raised beds, built to hold a slope and match the stone elsewhere in the garden.

Retaining walls are designed to hold back soil and make a slope usable, then matched to the paths, beds and fire features around them. On the Washington Park bungalow, each piece of Colorado buff stone was hand-chiseled to fit; in City Park West every raised bed was veneered in real stone.

Fireplaces, fire pits and pergolas

Wood-burning stone fireplaces, gas fire pits, outdoor kitchens and pergolas stained to match the house.

Stonegate builds simple round fire pits and large custom fireplaces, and works them into the hardscape so they belong to the garden. It also builds outdoor kitchens alongside the fire. Pergolas and fences are built from quality lumber with a custom stain to match the house, and a vine such as wisteria, clematis or trumpet vine over a pergola gives shade in summer and lets sun through in winter.

Water features

Reflecting ponds with koi and water lilies, wall fountains and waterfalls, sized to the garden and to the sound you want.

The first question is which sound you want: the trickle of a wall fountain, the rush of a waterfall or the stillness of a reflecting pond. Koi help keep a pond in balance and live a long time, and water lilies are hardy, easy to care for and open each day. Moving water also helps cover traffic noise.

Water-wise gardens

Xeriscapes of drought-tolerant perennials, shrubs and trees that look full and planned, never sparse.

Denver’s dry climate rewards a water-wise plan. Stonegate layers drought-tolerant plants for color and texture in every season, so the yard asks for less water and less upkeep over time. Call for a free site visit to talk through a xeriscape for your property.

Garden care

Kept the way it was designed.

Stonegate looks after the gardens it builds, and existing gardens too. Crews work a monthly schedule and look for anything out of the ordinary: branches broken in a windstorm, aphids on the foliage, a dry spot from a broken sprinkler head. A supervisor checks each property routinely.

  • Weeding, mulching and pruning
  • Fertilizing, watering and deadheading
  • Seasonal annuals and signature planters
  • Spring bulbs and pansies
  • Fall clean-up
  • Snow plowing and hand shoveling

Stonegate is a 100 percent organic company and uses no pesticides or chemicals.

Garden care in detail

Seasonal color

Signature planters, annuals and spring bulbs.

Stonegate helps choose containers to suit your style or budget, then fills them with hand-picked annuals in your color palette and feeds and deadheads them all summer.

Annuals are mixed for texture and color and matched to each spot’s sun or shade. In fall, crews plant tulips, hyacinths and daffodils with pansies under trees, along borders and in patio pots for color the next spring.

Planters also help a house show well. Stonegate works with Realtors to dress up homes and businesses going on the market.
